The 3rd Annual Metgzer Cup Games

The 2023 Long Island Lacrosse Showcase culminated with The 3rd Annual Metzger Cup Games on Thursday, June 22nd. The winners of each Nassau versus Suffolk game were presented with the Metzger Cup by benefactor James Metzger and Vincent J. Sombrotto of the Whitmore Group.

The Most Valuable Players of each contest were also presented with their trophies by Metzger and Sombrotto. 

​

Mr. James Metzger has been an ardent supporter of lacrosse on Long Island for many years. A former Ray Enners Award winner as the best high school lacrosse player in Suffolk County, James has devoted a great deal of his time to recognize and honor the student-athletes of Long Island. 

​

Metzger was a lacrosse, football and basketball standout at Half Hollow Hills High School East and a lacrosse All-American at Hofstra University during the 1970s. A lacrosse benefactor for youth, high school and college programs on Long Island, he is founder and CEO of Whitmore—The Agency, one of the largest independent insurance and financial firms in the New York metropolitan area with offices in Garden City.

Sombrotto attended Chaminade High School in Mineola during the 1970s and was a Hofstra All-American midfielder. He was named to the 1982 All-World Team and is a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Sombrotto is a senior vice president at Whitmore.

Rising Freshmen Game 

Brayden Robertiello of Garden City High School and Brady Smith of Manhasset High School were named co-MVP in leading Nassau County over Suffolk County 12-8 in the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase Top 25 Game of Rising Freshmen at Hofstra University on June 22.
 

Rising Sophomore Game

Devin Paccione of Wantagh High School and Brody Waxer of Syosset High School were named co-MVP in leading Nassau County over Suffolk County 13–11 in the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase Top 25 Game of Rising Sophomores at Hofstra University on June 22.
 

Rising Junior Game

Jack Cavalieri of Centereach High School and Jackson Thompson of Miller Place High School were named co-MVP in leading Suffolk County over Nassau County 17-9 in the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase Top 25 Game of Rising Sophomores at Hofstra University on June 22.
 

Rising Senior Game

Caden Lennon of Farmingdale High School was named the game’s MVP in leading Nassau County over Suffolk County 14–10 in the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase Top 25 Game of Rising Seniors at Hofstra University on June 22.
